Consent in Practice

Navigating consent is not a static, boring thing. Consent is a living, breathing place we arrive at together. It is relationship. It is a vehicle for our liberation. Consent is the result of active participation and navigation, time for reflection, and space for emergent shifts in real time. Much of the unease around consent culture is that as a society, we have either never developed, or have long forgotten, what it means to be in a reciprocal relationship built on deep listening.

Due to cultural context, Westerners often approach our interactions from a transactional perspective rather than forming agreements based on the agency and sovereignty of all individuals and the good of the whole. Under transactional pressures, consent is no longer an empowering exploration shared by multiple individuals; it becomes reduced to a way of preventing liability.

However, when we take the time to reframe the idea of consent from a liability lens to a possibility lens, everything shifts. Now, instead of consent being a box we must check in order to prevent lawsuits or misunderstandings, it becomes an exploration that offers wide-open horizons where first and foremost, the client can experience being empowered, heard, trusted, and respected. In addition, the facilitator can rest in the knowledge that they have supported their client in a way that centered active choice.
